The Oncidium Gallery

Oncidium Sw.

The genus Oncidium is one of the largest in the family Orchidcaea. There are some 600-700 species distributed through Central and South America across to the West Indies.

They have a great diversity with many different growth and flowering habits, from miniature plants only a few centimeters tall to plants with quite large football sized pseudobulbs with long lanceolate leaves and sometimes an inflorescence up to 240cm long with hundreds of flowers produced.

Many of the species also produce perfumes, adding to their aesthetic appeal and beauty. The majority of species are quite easy to grow, yet depending on which particular species one may be dealing with. Their cultural temperature requirements will vary from cool to warm growing. However, no matter whether they are warm or cool growing all Oncidium species need an unimpeded supply of fresh air and movement around the plant as a whole. An imperative key factor to successful Oncidium culture. Of course ample water during the growing season should be supplied with a drier rest during the cooler months. There are Oncidium species for almost every garden and green house environment. And with their magnificent displays of long lasting blooms, more people should be growing them.
