Maxillaria chyrsantha Barb. & Rodr.
And M. porphyrostele Rchb.f.

Maxillaria chyrsantha is a very vigorous species from southern Brazil, it occurs at altitudes of around 1400m. It produces masses of Canary yellow blooms. Each pseudobulb can produce up to 6 single flowers in early Spring. It is closely related to and often confused with Maxillaria porphyrostele Rchb.f. which is also from Brazil. If you look at the photo supplied, we have M. chrysantha on the left and M. porphyrostele on the right. The lateral sepals of M. chrysantha always curve inwards, where as M. porphyrostele the lateral sepals tend to spread out wards, there are also obvious differences in the lip. Both species are very hardy and rewarding species in cool to intermediate climates as a landscape or bush house plant. Both produce a sweet perfume
